Pythagorean Numerology

Pythagorean Numerology is the most widely-used numerological system in contemporary Western practice. It takes its name from Pythagoras, the 6th-century BCE Greek philosopher whose school (the Pythagorean brotherhood at Croton) developed mathematical-mystical doctrines treating number as the foundation of cosmic order. The specific letter-to-number table used in contemporary Pythagorean Numerology — assigning A=1, B=2, and cycling 1 through 9 across the Latin alphabet — is substantially modern systematisation. Historical Pythagorean fragments do not preserve this exact table; the modern form consolidated in the late 19th and 20th centuries through Western occult and numerological writers.

Tradition and grounding

The Pythagorean brotherhood's classical teachings survive primarily through later sources — Philolaus, Plato's Timaeus, and Neoplatonist commentators. Classical teachings emphasised the interpretive significance of numbers 1 through 10, with 10 as the sacred tetractys. The modern letter-to-number assignment used in contemporary Pythagorean Numerology was consolidated by Western numerological writers in the late 19th century, including L. Dow Balliett and her successors. The contemporary tradition is Pythagorean-descended rather than a direct preservation — the interpretive framework is 20th-century Western synthesis, not classical Greek.

Computation method

Pythagorean letter-to-number table:

The table assigns values 1–9 cyclically across the alphabet in positional order (A=1, B=2, ..., I=9, J=1 again, and so on). Unlike the Chaldean table, all nine single-digit values are used.

Life Path computation: sum all digits of the full birth date (DD + MM + YYYY), reduce by digit-sum until a single digit 1–9 remains, except that 11, 22, and 33 are retained as master numbers per the standard modern convention.

Name-letter computations (Expression, Soul Urge, Personality, etc.): assign Pythagorean values to the relevant letter subset, sum, and reduce with master-number retention as applicable.

Tradition-specific interpretation register

Contemporary Pythagorean Numerology reads the nine single-digit numbers through archetypal meanings: 1 — leadership; 2 — partnership; 3 — creative expression; 4 — structure; 5 — freedom; 6 — nurture; 7 — introspection; 8 — material mastery; 9 — completion. Master Numbers 11, 22, 33 carry heightened registers of 2, 4, 6 respectively. These archetypal associations are modern Western-tradition formulations, not documented in surviving Pythagorean primary sources.

How Pythagorean Numerology differs from Indian Vedic Numerology

Pythagorean Numerology differs from Indian Vedic numerology in four primary respects. First, the letter-value table: Pythagorean uses A=1, B=2 cycling through 1–9; Indian Vedic numerology (for nāmāṅka computation) uses the Chaldean letter-value table.
