Pañcamīपञ्चमी(Panchami)
The fifth tithi; devatā Nāga, Pūrṇā-class, classical register of healing and serpent-tradition.
Pañcamī
Pañcamī (पञ्चमी, also written Panchami) is the fifth of the thirty tithis, occurring in both Śukla-pakṣa and Kṛṣṇa-pakṣa. Its presiding devatā is Śeṣa — the cosmic serpent who supports the universe on his coils and whose form serves as the couch on which Viṣṇu reclines between cycles of creation. In some classical sources the Nāga-rāja (serpent-king) collective is given as the devatā class, with Śeṣa as the primary member. In the five-class auspiciousness scheme of the Muhūrta Cintāmaṇi, Pañcamī belongs to the Pūrṇā class (tithis 5, 10, 15) — the full, complete register, among the most auspicious of all tithi classes.
Classical grounding
Muhūrta Cintāmaṇi and the Nirṇaya Sindhu identify Śeṣa as Pañcamī's devatā. The Mahābhārata and Bhāgavata Purāṇa describe Śeṣa as Ananta — the infinite serpent — and as the cosmic floor on which Viṣṇu rests in yoga-nidrā between the cycles. The Nāga Pañcamī observance on Śrāvaṇa-Śukla-Pañcamī is the major annual Śeṣa/Nāga festival, during which serpent-worship observances are performed across many regional traditions. The Pūrṇā auspiciousness classification places Pañcamī among the six most favourable tithis for completion-oriented and fullness-oriented undertakings.
Significations
What Pañcamī classically governs:
- Serpent-related ritual observance — Nāga Pañcamī on Śrāvaṇa- Śukla-Pañcamī is the principal annual observance; monthly Pañcamī-s also carry the Nāga register
- Fullness, completion, and the register of undertakings meant to reach a prosperous consummation
- Education and the opening of formal study — Vasanta Pañcamī (Māgha-Śukla-Pañcamī) is classically the day of Sarasvatī invocation, when children are introduced to letters (akṣara- ārambha) in many regional traditions
- Learning of scripture, music, dance, and the arts — Vasanta Pañcamī specifically ties to Sarasvatī's register
- Initiation of long-duration studies and academic enrolments
- Medical observances; the Pañcamī tithi is read for physician consultation and treatment-commencement in some regional traditions, particularly where serpent-associated conditions are concerned
Pakṣa-level reading
In Śukla-pakṣa, Pañcamī carries the waxing register with full Pūrṇā-class auspiciousness — the most auspicious manifestation. Vasanta Pañcamī (Sarasvatī-Pañcamī) and Rṣi Pañcamī are two of the major Śukla-Pañcamī observances. The Śukla-Pañcamī half-tithis carry the movable karaṇas Bava and Bālava, both generally favourable. In Kṛṣṇa-pakṣa, Pañcamī carries the waning register — still Pūrṇā-class and favourable, but the serpent-register takes precedence over the fullness-register on the Nāga Pañcamī of Śrāvaṇa which falls on Śukla side. The Kṛṣṇa-Pañcamī half-tithis carry Kaulava and Taitila, both movable karaṇas classically favourable for general muhūrta.
Muhūrta-relevance
Pañcamī is classically favourable for almost every auspicious undertaking, with particular suitability for the initiation of studies, the opening of educational institutions, and for devotional observances directed to Śeṣa or Sarasvatī. The tithi is read alongside its karaṇa and vāra — a Pañcamī on Budhavāra (Wednesday, ruled by Budha) is classically excellent for education-related initiations, since Budha is the graha of articulation and learning. Medical treatment involving poison, venom, or snake-bite is traditionally discussed in the context of the Pañcamī tithi and Śeṣa-associated practice.
